Hoffman York & Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward
At the end of the nineteenth century, Milwaukee’s Third Ward was a manufacturing powerhouse producing shoes, gloves, coats, hats, confectionery, horse carriages and saddles. Today, Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward is an arts and entertainment district. However, its manufacturing roots live on through “ghost signs” which dot the landscape. Protected by the Historic Registry, these deteriorating advertisements must remain in their natural state until they fade from existence. But with Augmented Reality, we can preserve this lost-art and view them as bright and as beautiful as when they were first painted over a hundred years ago. Because most of the ghost signs were illegible, they were recreated using early photographs from the archives of the Milwaukee Public Library, the Milwaukee Country Historical Society and the Wisconsin Historical Society. However, the buildings were too big for traditional AR. So, a new anchoring method was invented using inputs from Google Earth, GPS and mapping data. After eight months of development, Augmented History went live. The walking tour gave visitors the opportunity to view 14 restored ghost signs with their phone. Augmented History not only gave tourists another reason to visit the Historic Third Ward, but insured its colorful history would live on forever.
